A visit to the Natural History Museum and Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2022

Spent the day with my seven year old son at the Natural History Museum looking at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year show. This year saw several entries that captured, in a single image, the devastating impact of climate change on animals and their habitat. There were several stunning photographs including this one of polar bears living in derelict human houses with no ice in sight.

You know what it’s like with children though. It can be a struggle to get them to talk about anything much sometimes. However on this occasion my son was pretty animated and declared:

“we’ve been learning about how to save our planet at school this week” !

I was pretty astonished because a) he’d never mentioned it before and b). because saving the planet was part of the school curriculum aged seven. Not in my day it wasn’t.

So I asked him… “how are we going to save the planet” ? To which he replied that he knew ten things that would help:

  1. write on both sides of your paper
  2. don’t leave the tap running while you scrub your teeth
  3. build your toys out of rubbish
  4. don’t use your car, bus, train or aeroplane. YOU CAN WALK !!!
  5. when it’s cold put a jumper on … you don’t need heating
  6. ….  “

And then silence. Turns out that just like all seven years olds something else had caught his attention and he’d wandered off to look at fossilised something or other.

So here’s the thing. What do we think are 6,7,8,9 and 10 from a seven years olds perspective? (Answers in the comments below please).

By the time my seven year old is twenty seven maybe we’ll be in a better place and we won’t need people like Brendan Doyle or Jessica Pickard to work on projects like Blue Marble Education –  https://lnkd.in/e4w-hkJ4

… or Ella Saltmarshe who posted just today about her work on a People’s Plan for Nature … to mentioned just a few.

So, what are the missing five things a seven year old might have forgotten to tell his father about saving the planet ?
